I'm always wanting to try new products, but find it quite expensive buying a full size product especially if you don't get on with it. So I found myself coming across a couple of boxes that you pay a monthly fee for and they send you 4 to 5 samples (sometimes full size) of products based loosely around you by a survey you fill out about your skin, hair, eye colour, your personality, your likes and problem areas.
I think these boxes are a great idea as there a great way of trying products/brands out that you have been wanting to try, finding new upcoming brands/products and are great at making you try a product that you wouldn't maybe usually try.
These boxes also give rewards for completing surveys on the samples you have recieved, birchbox gives you 5 points for completing each survey which you can then use those points to buy products in there shop. You can only redeem your points to use in the shop after you reach a multiple of £10. Glossybox reward you for completing there surveys by giving you glossy dots to redeem against getting a free box. You get 50 glossy dots per completed survey, you need 1000 glossy dots to redeem a free box.
I currently have a subscription to both birchbox and glossybox so if you have been wondering what these boxes are like or if your wanting to subscribe but are not sure which one may be better suited to you then here is my April box from both to give you some insight.
Birchbox £10 plus £2.95 p+p
It states that you will get 4 to 5 products but I have always received 5 products and lifestyle extras. Lifestyle extras are little goodies that they pop in like food, false lashes, pencil sharpener or something along those lines. You could receive well known brands, unkown brands or new brands in this box. I believe this box to be more of a highend brand box as over the months of receiving this box these are some of the brands I've come across that I've known of; Laura Mercier, Philip Kingsley, bioderma, the balm, models co, benefit, dr Brandt, Molton brown and aromatherapy associates. You also come across a lot more natural products in this box than in the glossybox.
The balm cosmetics - how 'bout them apples? -£26 for pallette of 6 creams
This is a cheek and lip cream. This is the cutest packaging I've seen on a sample product, not a lot of effort usually goes into sample packaging but this is just lovely. The colour I got was pie. It's bright pink. It's creamy in texture and I couldn't wait to try this as soon as I opened the box. After testing this product I do think this is suited to me, the season and would buy the pallette.
Lord & berry couture kohl Kajal eye pencil. - £10 for 4g
When I swatched this on the back of my hand it was quite creamy feeling and didn't drag on the skin. This seems like it will be a good eyeliner but for £10 there are so many good high street eyeliners that I was not super excited about seeing this product in my box.
Colour club gala gems nail polish in the colour breakfast at.... - £15 for 4
This nail polish applied lovely only needed 2 coats and it's a frosted pale green. The big bonus for this product in the box was that birchbox actually gave you the opportunity to pick 1 out of the 4 colours that you would most like (first come first served) so I was very happy to get the colour I wanted. I enjoyed using this product and this is definatley going to be a staple colour for me this spring.
Tommyguns pomegranate & orange flower shampoo - £5.50 for 250ml (full size product)
This shampoo is good for all hair types. The pomegranate protects and the orange flower add shine. This product smells so yummy and i can't wait to try it to see if it does leave my hair shiney.
One love organics skin saviour waterless beauty balm - £30 for 39ml
This is a balm that can be used to cleanse your makeup off at the end of the day or it can be used moisturise skin. This balm has a citrus scent so it's very refreshing. It states that it won't strip your skin of its protective layer and that it's all natural so free from any nasties. I've been wanting to try a cleansing balm for a while now so I was very excited to see this in my box and looking forward to using it.
Propercorn fiery Worcester sauce & sun dried tomato. - £0.90 for 20g
This was my lifestyle extra. When I saw this I thought what a weird combination and on popcorn. I didn't think I would like this at all. However when I tried them I couldn't stop eating them, they were under 40 calories (bonus!) so good for a healthy snack.
Glossybox £10 plus £3.25 p+p
You will always receive 5 products in this box, you tend to get more full size products in this box than in the birchbox. You receive products from brands that are well known, unknown and new. In my opinion glossybox is a high street box as a few of the brands I have received over the months are maybeline, ciate, seche, elegant touch, tresseme, wilkinson sword, rituals, Bellapiere, sleek, and mememe.
Here are my 5 samples.
Emite makeup - lip brush - L312 £17 (full size product)
Generally I would be quite excited to receive a makeup brush but a lip brush didn't excite me that much. However, it does look better than the one I have with it being angled.
Monu spa - warming ginger massage and body oil - £25 for 100ml
This smells absolutely amazing I love the smell of ginger, but again I was not overly excited as to me this is more of an autum/winter product not a spring/summer product. I don't generally take baths in the spring/summer and it suggests that you use it as a bath oil or body oil, it's not a scent I associate with spring/summer either. But this will be a lovely product to use later in the year or on a day I do just want to chill and pamper myself in the bath. This is definatley suited to me with the scent just not season orientated.
Mememe cosmetics - beat the blues - pearl pink - £5.50 for 12ml (full size product)
This product reminds me of a product from benefit there high beam, so I was intrigued to try this product. When applying it to the back of my hand I was very happy with the consistency of the product and how it looked when blended, but the brush is very hard so I would defiantly apply to the hand and then use where or how you want to rather than applying it to the face incase it scratched the skin. I was very happy to receive this as it has so many uses and is perfect for the spring/summer.
Tresemme instant refresh cleansing dry shampoo - £4.99 for 200ml
Got to love a dry shampoo, I was definatley happy to receieve this as I love trying out a new dry shampoo. This smells fresh and it states that its not only for removeimg the oil but adds body to the hair so I'm looking forward to trying that out. This is not a full size product but it is a travel size product which is handy to just throw in your handbag.
Unica cosmetics radiance plus - £12.95 for 50ml
This smells very spicy and when applied to the back of my hand smelt of lavender. I'm not a big lavender fan infact I hate it with a passion, but I do like the idea of it being a radiance cream. As who doesn't like to be radiant. Personally I don't think this is a product for me just down to the scent of it but I'm willing to try this product at night time in the hope that I will wake up with radiant skin and that the lavender scent helps me sleep. This product is also a organic product so it's free from the nasties.
I hope this has helped you decide if one, none or both of these boxes are right for you. If you would like to see a full review on any of the products then let me know or if you would like to see my May boxes to help you decide further then let me know.
